Four checks before buying a replacement
1. Match the product to the surface
Read the complete product directions and the surface manufacturer's care instructions. A multi-surface claim does not cover every stone, wood finish or fabric. For Branch Basics, use the specific product and dilution guide; its Concentrate is not a disinfectant or a universal replacement for specialty products.
2. Compare the exact ingredient list
Use the current label and manufacturer's ingredient disclosure for the scent and formula you plan to buy. Plant-derived ingredients and essential oils are not automatically suitable for everyone. If you avoid fragrance, distinguish a fragrance-free formula from one scented with essential oils. We compare six independent non-toxic cleaners by ingredients and ownership in our roundup.
3. Check what a certification covers
EPA Safer Choice evaluates ingredients and category-specific performance, among other criteria. Check the current product directory. Certification applies to a listed product, not automatically to everything its manufacturer sells. Company-level B Corp status answers a different question from a product's formula or disinfectant label.
4. Count usable refills, not bottles of concentrate
Compare the recommended dose and resulting quantity for the same job. Include reusable bottles, replacement parts, required appliances and shipping in your own cost comparison. We do not assume that every refill system saves 40–60%, or that a concentrate signals better ownership or product quality.

Does a cleaning product also disinfect?
Only when its label supports that use. Cleaning removes dirt and many germs; disinfection uses a product labeled for the organism, surface and required wet contact time. Branch Basics Concentrate and Blueland Multi-Surface Cleaner are cleaners, not disinfectants. Force of Nature has an EPA-registered disinfectant label with specific directions.
Which of these cleaners are fragrance-free?
Four of the five picks have no added scent. Branch Basics Concentrate is fragrance-free. Meliora Laundry Powder (Unscented) and AspenClean Dish Soap (Unscented) have no added scent. Force of Nature has no added fragrance, but it has a light pool smell. Blueland Fresh Lemon is scented. Check the label for the exact scent you buy.
Does independent ownership make a cleaner safer?
No. Ownership tells you which business receives your money. Ingredients, concentration, exposure, surface compatibility and directions determine how a particular product should be used. Our ownership classification is separate from our ingredient assessment.
Can one concentrate replace every household cleaner?
Do not assume that it can. A concentrate may support several labeled dilutions, but that does not make it a disinfectant, dishwasher detergent or a suitable treatment for every stain and surface. Check the exact product guide and your surface manufacturer’s care instructions.
Do refills always save money?
No fixed percentage applies to every household. Compare the cost per usable diluted bottle or laundry load, including the starter container, refill dose, shipping and any required appliance. A product you already own may meet the same cleaning need.
What does EPA Safer Choice mean?
The program evaluates ingredients, product performance, pH, packaging and other criteria. Check the exact product in EPA’s directory; a brand-level claim does not certify every formula. Safer Choice is not the same as EPA registration for a disinfectant.
