Primally Pure

Unscented Deodorant (Baking Soda Free)

Bethany McDaniel's founder story explains the brand's farm origins. That history is separate from whether a particular formula suits your skin.

The Unscented Deodorant (Baking Soda Free) lists magnesium compounds, arrowroot, coconut oil, tallow and beeswax. The original Unscented deodorant is a different formula; “unscented” alone is not enough to identify this one. Choose a size on the manufacturer's page.

A cream jar with baking soda

PiperWai

Activated Charcoal Deodorant Cream, 1.7 oz jar

The original 1.7 oz Activated Charcoal Deodorant Cream is applied with clean fingers. Its current ingredient list includes sodium bicarbonate and several essential oils.

PiperWai describes itself as Black, female-owned on its About page. Our earlier claim that Jess Edelstein alone controlled the company was not established. A television pitch does not prove an investment closed or establish today's shareholders.

Original and sensitive are different

Humble Brands

Sensitive Skin Simply Unscented, 2.5 oz stick

Humble's founder story identifies Jeff Shardell and the brand's Taos origins. The useful product distinction is the original versus Sensitive Skin label.

Sensitive Skin Simply Unscented uses magnesium hydroxide and candelilla wax. The original Simply Unscented contains baking soda and beeswax. Our selected Amazon product is the standard 2.5 oz sensitive stick.

Sensitive cream still has fragrance

Fat and the Moon

Sensitive Pit Cream

Rachel Budde's brand story describes the herbalist background. It does not establish comparative product performance or zero outside investment.

Sensitive Pit Cream omits baking soda but contains beeswax and basil and vetiver oils. Compare the small and full sizes with how quickly you expect to use a jar; the maker specifies six months after opening.

Withdrawn

Each & Every is withheld from this shortlist

Our earlier claim that the founders left P&G and retained control was not substantiated. The brand's current terms link to P&G documents, and P&G's patent-brand index includes Each & Every. We have removed it from this shortlist pending clarification. Read the primary sources and correction.

Limits

What this comparison can establish

We compare current manufacturer ingredient lists, documented ownership evidence and exact listing identities. Founder stories are not audited shareholder registers. We have not measured odor control, staining, residue or individual skin tolerance, and do not infer those outcomes from company size.

Our earlier advice to push through a fixed “detox” period was unsupported. Stop using a product that irritates your skin rather than treating a reaction as proof that it is working. FDA explains the limits of hypoallergenic claims and natural cosmetic labeling. The National Cancer Institute's evidence summary does not support our old implication that switching deodorants is a breast-cancer prevention measure.

Read the existing scoring framework, editorial policy and affiliate disclosure. For corporate history, use the Native ownership file; for the purchase decision, use the exact-formula comparison.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do natural deodorants reduce sweat?

These deodorants are intended for odor control. If reducing perspiration is your priority, compare products labeled as antiperspirants. We have not measured all-day odor control or sweating for these four formulas.

Is natural deodorant automatically safer?

No. FDA has not defined natural in cosmetic labeling, and the term does not establish individual skin tolerance. A short ingredient list, founder story or high editorial score cannot guarantee a reaction-free product.

Should I switch deodorants for cancer prevention?

That is not an evidence-based reason for this shortlist. The National Cancer Institute reports no scientific evidence linking antiperspirant or deodorant use to breast cancer. Choose according to the job, ingredients and personal preferences; discuss individual medical concerns with a clinician.

Which reviewed formulas omit baking soda?

Humble Sensitive Skin Simply Unscented, Primally Pure Unscented Baking Soda Free and Fat and the Moon Sensitive Pit Cream omit it on their current labels. PiperWai original Activated Charcoal Deodorant Cream contains sodium bicarbonate. Formula names matter.
