Sulfate-free. Silicone-free. And not owned by Unilever or P&G. These five shampoo brands are founder-led with no corporate parent, which is rarer than you would think.

Why this list

Most clean shampoos answer to a conglomerate

Here is a sentence that should not be controversial but somehow is: most "clean" and "natural" shampoos on the shelf at Target and Whole Foods are not independent companies. They are brands owned by the same conglomerates that sell Head & Shoulders and Pantene.

SheaMoisture? Unilever bought them in 2017 through its acquisition of Sundial Brands. Living Proof? Also Unilever, same year. Mielle Organics? Procter & Gamble agreed to buy them in 2023, for a reported $640 million. Love Beauty and Planet? That one was never independent: a team inside Unilever built it, and Unilever unveiled it in December 2017 to look like an indie brand. There was no outside founder and no garage, just a corporate team that designed pastel bottles and a feel-good name.

This does not automatically mean the products are bad. But when you buy them, your money goes to Unilever or P&G, and formulas can change after an acquisition without an announcement.

We wanted shampoos that score well on both of our measures, ingredient safety and ownership independence, from companies whose founders still lead them. Here are five that passed.

EWG Verified options at the lowest price tier

ATTITUDE

Moisturizing Shampoo for Dry and Damaged Hair, 16 oz

ATTITUDE offers EWG Verified shampoos. The program assesses specific formulas against its ingredient and disclosure criteria. Confirm the exact product and scent in EWG's directory; a listing is not a guarantee that every formula suits every person.

Founded by Jean-Francois Bernier, ATTITUDE uses plant-based and mineral-derived ingredients across its range. The Super Leaves line uses grape seed and olive leaf extracts. The Sensitive Skin line is sold fragrance-free.

It sits in the lowest price tier on this list.

Check before choosing

EWG Verified provides published criteria to check alongside the product's ingredient list. Compare the exact formula, scent, size, and current price before choosing. The shampoo linked here is scented; choose the Sensitive Skin range if you avoid fragrance.

Founder-operated since 2009

Acure

Curiously Clarifying Shampoo, 8 oz

Acure has been making clean beauty products since 2009, long before "clean beauty" became a marketing buzzword. The company is privately held and founder-operated, with no corporate parent.

Its shampoos are marketed as vegan and free of sulfates, parabens and silicones. The Curiously Clarifying formula linked here uses lemongrass and argan oil; the Mega Moisture formula is aimed at dry or damaged hair.

It shares the lowest price tier on this list with ATTITUDE.

Why we like it

Founder-operated for more than fifteen years, with straightforward ingredient lists and an accessible price.

Founder-owned, salon-channel formulas

Innersense

Hydrating Cream Hairbath Shampoo, 10 oz

Innersense was founded by Greg and Joanne Starkman, who still own it. The company set out to show that non-toxic hair care could meet salon expectations.

Its formulas use organic botanicals, cold-pressed oils, and naturally derived proteins, and the brand describes them as free from sulfates, silicones, parabens, gluten, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.

The Hydrating Cream Hairbath linked here is its everyday cleanser. Innersense also makes Pure Harmony, a lighter clarifying option, and Color Awakening for color-treated hair.

Why we like it

Founder-owned since 2005, B Corp certified, and focused on formulas without silicones, a harder problem to solve for smoothness.

It sits in the highest price tier on this list. If price matters most, look at ATTITUDE or Acure.

Food-grade ingredient philosophy

100% PURE

Kelp & Mint Volumizing Shampoo, 8 oz

100% PURE was founded by Ric Kostick, Susie Wang and James Wang with a strict philosophy: if it is not safe to eat, it does not belong in their products. They use fruit pigments, plant-based vitamins, and food-grade ingredients across their beauty line, including hair care.

Their shampoos use ingredients like coconut milk, kelp, and burdock root, and the brand describes them as free from sulfates, silicones, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and artificial colors.

The Kelp & Mint Volumizing Shampoo linked here is made for fine, limp hair. The brand also makes a Coconut Milk Restorative Shampoo for dry or damaged hair.

Why we like it

The founders still own and run the company, and the food-grade philosophy makes many of the ingredient lists easy to recognize.

Built for textured hair

Sienna Naturals

H.A.P.I. Shampoo, 11 oz

Sienna Naturals was founded by Hannah Diop and is still founder-led. The brand was built specifically for textured, curly, coily, and kinky hair, a segment that has been historically underserved by both conventional and clean beauty brands.

Its formulas are sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, and designed to work with natural curl patterns, with a focus on scalp health.

The H.A.P.I. Shampoo is its sulfate-free cleanser. The range also includes Dew Magic leave-in conditioner and Plant Power scalp serum.

Why we like it

Still founder-led in a category where Black-founded brands keep getting acquired (SheaMoisture by Unilever, Mielle by P&G, Carol's Daughter by L'Oreal). It has taken some outside investment, which is why its independence score is 9.

Check before choosing

Sienna Naturals is specifically formulated for textured hair. If you have straight or fine hair, the formulas may be too rich for your hair type. For straight or fine hair, look at ATTITUDE or Acure instead.

Ownership research

Who to avoid

These four brands dominate the "natural" and "clean" shampoo shelves at most retailers. All four are owned by (or were created by) multinational corporations. They are not independent, regardless of how the packaging looks.

SheaMoisture Unilever 2017
Living Proof Unilever 2017
Mielle Organics Procter & Gamble 2023
Love Beauty and Planet Unilever Created in-house 2017

SheaMoisture was founded by Richelieu Dennis and built on his grandmother's recipes from Sierra Leone. Unilever acquired the parent company Sundial Brands in 2017 and did not disclose the price. We have written about who owns SheaMoisture in detail.

Living Proof was marketed as a science-backed clean brand, with Jennifer Aniston as an investor and spokesperson. Unilever acquired it the same year as SheaMoisture.

Mielle Organics was founded by Monique Rodriguez. P&G agreed to acquire it in January 2023; the companies did not disclose terms, and the price was reported at $640 million.

Love Beauty and Planet was never an independent brand. Unilever built it in-house and unveiled it in December 2017, designed to look like a small indie company (minimal branding, "ethical" messaging, pastel bottles, sustainability claims). There was no outside founder, no origin story and no acquisition.

Method

How we chose these brands

Every brand on Trusted Labels is evaluated on two axes:

  • Ingredient Safety (1-10): Cross-referenced against the EWG Skin Deep database and INCI safety data. We check for sulfates (SLS, SLES), silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone), parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde releasers, and synthetic fragrances. Third-party certifications like EWG Verified and MADE SAFE carry significant weight. We also evaluate the overall formulation philosophy: are they minimizing ingredients for marketing, or because fewer ingredients actually perform better?
  • Independence (1-10): Researched through Crunchbase, SEC filings, acquisition press releases, LinkedIn profiles, and corporate records. Founder-owned with zero outside investment earns a 10. VC-backed with founder in control gets 7-9 depending on dilution and board structure. Acquired by a multinational gets 1-3.

For this roundup, we started from the shampoo brands in our catalog, left out corporate-owned brands, and used each brand's existing scores. We ordered the list by who each one suits best rather than by raw score, prioritizing strong ingredient scores and founder control while keeping standout options for affordability, premium formulas, and textured hair.

We earn affiliate commissions on some products linked in this article. Our commissions do not influence our scores. See our affiliate disclosure for full transparency, and our scoring methodology page for details on how every number is calculated.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do sulfate-free shampoos actually clean your hair?

Yes. Sulfates (SLS, SLES) are strong surfactants: they create a big lather and remove oil very effectively. Sulfate-free shampoos use milder surfactants like coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, or sodium cocoyl isethionate. These still clean your hair while removing less of your scalp's natural oil.

Why does independence matter for shampoo brands?

When a conglomerate acquires a brand, formulation decisions move to the new owner. Formulas can change after an acquisition without an announcement, so compare the current label with the one you know. Independence means the people who chose the ingredients still decide what goes in the bottle.

What is the best budget option on this list?

Compare ATTITUDE and Acure by the current price per ounce for the formula you want. Prices and sizes vary by retailer. If EWG Verified status matters to you, confirm the exact product in the directory rather than relying on the brand name.

Can I find any of these at regular stores?

Store availability changes by region and retailer, so check before you go. All five picks link to exact Amazon listings on this page.
