Consumer Reports "do not consume" — lead + cadmium

In Consumer Reports' October 2025 test of 23 protein powders, Huel Black Edition (Chocolate) was one of only two products CR said to avoid entirely: lead at ~1,288% of CR's daily level of concern and cadmium (~9.2 mcg) at roughly twice the safe daily limit. (CR's "level of concern" is stricter than FDA limits; Huel disputes the benchmark.)

Our take

Why We Flagged It

We don't recommend it as a clean pick. It's VC-backed, and Consumer Reports told people to avoid its Black Edition entirely over lead and cadmium. It's here as a cautionary reference, with founder-owned, third-party-tested alternatives above.
