Earth Mama Organics

Nurse-founded and still independent: EWG-rated-1 organic mineral sunscreen with 25% non-nano zinc.

Our take

Why We Trust This Brand

Earth Mama is about as clean as mineral SPF gets: 25% non-nano zinc, no chemical filters, no added fragrance, an EWG best-rating of 1, and NSF/ANSI 305 organic certification. On ownership it's a rare fully independent, founder-run company, Melinda Olson founded it in 2002 and is still its founder/CEO, with no venture rounds on record. Our one caveat is that we couldn't find an explicit 2024-25 primary-source ownership statement, so independence is inferred from strong circumstantial evidence. It is frequently confused with an unrelated Toronto grocery, which is not this company.

Who owns it

Ownership & Independence

Earth Mama Organics was founded in 2002 by nurse/herbalist Melinda Olson, who is still credited as founder and CEO. Crunchbase and Tracxn show no funding rounds, and no acquisition of this Oregon company could be verified, so it appears to remain independently founder-owned. The 'Earth Mama was acquired' rumor traces to confusion with the unrelated Toronto e-grocer 'Mama Earth Organics,' bought by Fresh City in 2022.
